Is Your Resume Doing It's Job?

I've been using the standard boiler plate resume and cover letter and customizing it to fit the position that I was applying for. Well, evidently that hasn't been good enough. So I decided to let a professional have a shot at it. She whipped up my resume in under 30 min. and was quite pleased with her work. I, on the other hand, wasn't as excited about her work as she was but she was the professional so I didn't question her. The format looked wierd and she had left out what was to me very important information.

I uploaded my resume and within two days had four requests and landed an interview with a South American company starting up new operations in the US.

So, if you think your resume is all that and a bag of chips, you may want to have a professional take a look at it. After all, getting your foot in the door is what it's all about.

Writing Basics

When I came to the online world I will admit I was shocked. As a professional I could not get over the inappropriate use of grammar. It made me wonder what a great many adults did for a living that they had such poor writing styles. I then began to realize what had occurred was the fault of the instant messaging systems on cellular phones. Adults had become so relaxed with their writing in order to use such systems that it had crossed over into their writing across the board. I can’t tell you the number of letters from parents I’ve seen over my years of teaching that slip into instant message grammar. The sad fact is though this type of writing leads people to be taken less serious. I know that when I read articles, essays, pleas for help that are so atrociously written that I trust very little of the content. I understand that I should indeed not be harsh on those for whom English is not a primarily language, but the reality is there are many countries out there who speak and write better English than we Americans do at home. So, my advise for those writing articles, writings, and so forth online for others to read, double check your grammar ahead of time. Simply write your first drafts in a word program and hit the grammar and spell check.

Now granted, it won’t catch all of your errors but you can program to catch those you make often so as not to make them when writing something that is to be read by other professionals. This includes notes to the teachers. I’ve met parents that I assumed had the same learning disorder as their child only to find out they had no such order, they simply could not master the English language. They expected their child to simply not be held accountable for English and wanted it included on their I.E.P. because the parent was unable to properly use the English language. I have to shake my head as a teacher on this one. So, how can you better prepare yourself on the basic mechanics? There is a wonderful website created by Purdue University that will tutor you in the basic grammar mechanics. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

About Help15

Hi, I am a single male and live alone. I was working as a free lance account manager in advertising, but as of January of this year the jobs started getting less and less. I started looking for full time work in advertising in January when I saw the free lance work suddenly dwindle, by February I was getting very worried and started looking for work outside of my field. At this point I even tried to get a job as a host in a restaurant, but was told I was over qualified. My money has completely ran out and I was served with my court papers this morning to evict from the premises. I am a trained and educated professional in the advertising industry who has never been out of work. I have nowhere else to move to, which includes family because of my sexual orientation. I've been interviewing almost daily at this point, but do not have a job offer on the table. I would appreciate if anyone could help me with $1400 to cover my rent, just to end the eviction process; the idea of being homeless scares me. I would more than gladly sign any legal binder to pay back the amount once I am employed again. I live in Long Beach Ca, and have a great place for a cheap price and don't want to loose my home after 10 years. I just need help to get through this.

8-12-2008 - Update. The job market in california is still dry. Since my original post, I lost my apartment, the city impounded my car for past due parking tickets and I don't have the 640.00 to get it out. I'm living in the back seat of my friends car and shower at the gym. During the day I stay at the Publi Library to use theie wireless services and job hunt.

I have worked in HP for 24 years leading the development of global programs. I started the HP (now Agilent) Education Program www.educatorscorner.com and an HP Small Business Program. The education program won the Presidents Award as presented by Al Gore and Tom Brokaw. I have managed marketing for many organizations in HP and other companies. My expertise is in marketing, program management, publicity, web, advertising and collateral. Upon leaving HP, I decided to pursue work that provided value to solve significant problems. Upon participating in one states senior games, I decided I wanted to help this fledgling organization to grow its awareness, participation and sponsor funding. The model I have developed and seek funding to implement delivers great value.

I have a strong background in ranching and cattle feeding and would like the opportunity to do it on my own.  I grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, moved west to South Dakota then to Wyoming and Colorado and now to California.  I have worked on a large cattle feeding organization and large ranches.  Working as a cowboy and general ranch work. Now I am working on acheiving a business degree through a program on the internet.  My interests include the pursuit of an education, success and the cattle and horse industries.
